Take the Risk

Take Risks

Recently I went to an event and I heard someone say that if you want to bring about change you have to take risks.

This particular event was on Marriage Equality, but can be applied to different areas where we are trying to bring about change.

The Gender Pay Gap for example.

It got me thinking.

And realising that it's totally true.

Change can come about in society if we take risks.

Go against the norm.

Stand up for something because we believe it's the right thing to do even when there is a magnitude of opposition.

But taking a risk doesn't have to be monumental for society.

It can be something in your own life.

Something personal.

Something that you need to do even though it's hard.

Even though you're scared.

Even though your afraid.

I want you to ask yourself these questions.

Where am I playing small?

Where am I being complacent?

Where do I want things to change?

Why hasn't it happened yet?

I have a sneaky suspicion that I know the answer to one, or two of those questions.

It's too hard.

I'm scared it won't work out/I'll look silly/of what others will think.

I don't know how, or where to start.

And you know something?

They are answers that a lot of my clients have, and that I hear A LOT!

And I'm going to get honest with you......

I call bullshit.

It's too hard? Really?

Or is it just that your not comfortable with getting uncomfortable.

You're afraid of what others will think.

Or that you'll look silly.

Or that it won't work.

So what?

You cannot live your life for others.

No matter what you do there are going to be people that won't like you.

There is NOTHING you can do about others opinion of you.

The sooner that you realise that the easier your life will get.

And I'm even going to flip your answers.

What if it DOES work?

What if everyone thinks you're a LEGEND?

What if you look like a flipping ROCKSTAR for chasing your dreams/changing your life/trying out for Masterchef/taking up pole dancing?

Fear is only perception.

It's in our heads.

Scenarios that we think will happen.

It's not real.

And yeah, all those bad things could happen.

But they also couldn't.

I know which results I'd be hoping for.

Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far it is possible to go.
— T.S. Eliot

Take the risk.

Change the course of your life.

Think of all those who took risks before us.

Rosa Parks.

Mother Theresa.

Nelson Mandela.

Ellen DeGeneres.

Yes, they are a hell of a lot bigger than you or me, but they took a risk nonetheless.

And look where we are because of that.

Now I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your life is short.

How much longer are you going to take the easy way?

How much longer are you going to say 'I'll start tomorrow/next week/next year'?

It's time to step up and do it.

Trust me, if it all goes to shit you will not walk away with nothing.

You will have lessons.

You will have a list of what not to do next time.

And you will also have growth.

That's worth any risk if you ask me.

So, over to you.

When are you going to take that risk?
And what is it going to be?
How are you going to step up?

I would love to hear it.
